How to create a mailing list at Monticello Avenue
Mailing lists are made available to support the mission of
Monticello Avenue and its member organizations. We do not offer mailing
lists to individuals or to organizations that are not members of the
Monticello Avenue community network.
Mailing lists
To create a mailing list at Monticello Avenue, complete and submit the
mailing
list application. Please
consult the following information as you complete the
application.
1. Name of organization.
2. Your Monticello Avenue User Id
3. The name of the person who will be maintaining the list (the list
owner).
The list owner oversees the day-to-day operation of the
list and is usually the first point of contact for list members should
difficulties with the list arise. This person receives the mail
delivery errors for the list and, when needed, works with the
webmaster to resolve list problems. List owners will
receive an explanation of the responsibilities of list owners.
4. Preferred List Name
List names should consist of letters
and numbers. Chose a name that describes the group that will
use the list and cannot be interpreted to reflect another group.
List names cannot be your user id or widely generic within the
Monticello Avenue community, for example, a list name of boardmembers
is not acceptable. Examples of acceptable list names
include:
montavv
5. Initial password for the list. This should be different from
the password you use for your organization's e-mail account.
The list password should be at least 6 characters in length. Characters
you may not use include: * ' " % ! # $ ? / \ @ ^
& ( ) + = { } [ ] | : ; < >
The password should contain one or more non-alphabetic character
and some of these should be internal. Example: swe,et1
The list owner is the only person who should know the
list password.
6. The type of list that you want:
Lists can be:
Closed - the list owner must approve all subscriptions to the
list.
Open - anyone who knows the name of the list can subscribe to the
list.
Open lists are created when no preference is given. The list owner can
change this preference in the list's control panel.
7. The purpose of the list.
Monticello Avenue mailing lists are reserved for eligible
organizations and entities and may not be used to represent any one
individual. All mailing lists on
Monticello Avenue servers must be affiliated with the mission of the
Information Provider; any advertising and commercial activity is
prohibited. As a precaution against unsolicited
subscribers/messages, we recommend that you advertise your mailing
list only within your organization.
Failure to abide by these guidelines will result in forfeiture of
the Monticello Avenue mailing list.
