Rhythm on the River inaugurated its celebratory tenth season June 1 in Dorrier Park, near the James River bridge, with the rousing music of Sons of Bill and Hackensaw Boys
This free summer music series began as the dream of Council for the Arts members Jan Glennie-Smith and Lisa Kadick. Their committee's success led to establishing an independent non-profit corporation. All contributions to the group--necessary to keep the music free!--are tax deductible. Hyosung and Kingsland Nursery have been long-time corporate sponsors, along with Council for the Arts
Sons of Bill, who also played in 2007, blend rock and bluegrass into a hillbilly country music style. The Hackensaw Boys have enjoyed long-time popularity with their tight harmonies and strong melody on banjo, mandolin and fiddle.
Rhythm on the River will again offer a community finale to July 4, ending with the Scottsville firemen's fireworks display, 6-9:30 p.m. Ron Johnson, who has played to great applause in Scottsville, will open with his wide-ranging collection of styles, and Jackass Flats, 2002 Virginia Bluegrass Champs, will offer their "foot-stomping" style blending old mountain and new 'grass music
Look for regular Rhythm on the River concerts August 3 and September 7, including Terri Allard, who sang at the first-ever concert. There may even be a surprise birthday for Rhythm on the River later in the season. Keep listening!
