The African American Genealogy Group of
Charlottesville and Albemarle
presented information on local Churches in a 1999 exhibit.
The list below identifies traditionally African American congregations.
Churches are listed alphabetically with earliest date available noted.
People should be reminded that although separate churches were usually
founded after the Civil War, people met informally or became members of
ante-bellum white congregations before that time.
This list was extracted from a large research effort to identify all
churches, past and present in Albemarle County and Charlottesville, Virginia.
It is being done by two volunteers of the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical
Society: A. Robert Kuhlthau and Julius Barclay. Members of the African
American Genealogy Group contributed additional information to their work.
We thank them for their generous help and encouragement.
