Windows 2000 - Dialup

Home > Host > Hosting FAQ> Windows 2000 Dial-up Instructions

The information given below is provided as guidance only. Installation on your computer may differ from that given below.

Remember, Windows 2000 the operating system is different from Microsoft Office 2000, which is the office suite program including Word 2000.

1. From the 'Start' button, select 'Settings', then 'Network and Dial-up Connections', then 'Make New Connection'. This will start the Network Connection Wizard.

2. Click Next

3. Select Dial-up to the Internet, then click Next.

4. This is perhaps the most confusing of the options this wizard will offer you. Despite what you may expect, you definitely want to choose I want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN). Once this is selected, click Next.

5. Choose I connect through a phone line and a modem. Click Next.

6. Here is where you must type in the telephone number you wish to dial when you choose this Dialup Networking session. Monticello Avenue is 984-0019. When you've entered it, click Next.

7. In the User Name field, you want to enter your Monticello Avenue User ID. This is the same ID you use to log into your Email.

In the Password field, put in your Monticello Avenue password. You will not be able to see what you are typing. Instead, asterisks appear to mask each character. This is so that someone looking over your shoulder while you log in won't see your password, unless they are good at watching hands and determining what is being typed. Once you enter your password, click Next

8. This is where you enter what will be the caption for the icon you will double click in order to fire up this connection to the Internet through your modem. You can type in whatever you like, though Windows will offer the suggestion Connection to followed by the telephone number you have entered for this connection. You might instead use something like Monticello Avenue. You choose. When you've typed in the name, click Next.

9. Choose No here. Whether you use Eudora, Netscape mail or even one of the Microsoft Email packages, it is better to set that up separately than to use this wizard for now. This is mostly an option for someone without the kind of established Email account you have here at Monticello Avenue, especially if you intend to check your mail from other computers at other times. Once No is selected, click Next.

10. If you now want to dial in, make sure there is a check mark in the box on this screen. If you are just setting up a session and you don't want to dial in now, clear the check mark. Once this decision is made, click Finish.

11. Later, whenever you select Start:Settings:Network and Dial-up Connections you will see a new icon with the caption you gave it.

Note that while the procedure given above usually works for most people, we have seemingly random instances of dialup networking not working unless you do the following steps.

1. Right mouse click on the dialup networking icon that is succeeding to make a connection, but failing to give you access to any Internet resources, like Email or Web pages. Choose Properties from the menu that appears.

2. Click on the Networking file tab at the top of this dialog box.

3. Make sure to select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then click the Properties button.

The default settings to obtain an IP address and a DNS server address automatically works most of the time for most people, though sometimes we need to specify the DNS Server Address. Select that option and enter the following addresses:

166.61.234.89

166.61.234.90

Thanks to the University of Virginia for these dial-up instructions.
