| 1. Open the Windows Dialup Networking Control
Panel (Click Start:Settings:Dial-Up Networking).
2. Double
click Make New Connection.
3. Click
Next
4. Enter your area code and any codes you need to dial an outside line.
Usually, this outside line field should be left blank. Click Close.
5. Here is where you must type in the name you choose for this
telephone number you will dial. You could choose Monticello Avenue
or whatever you like.
6. Next, you enter the telephone number you will want your modem to
dial when you start up your Dialup session. For Monticello Avenue, that
number is 984-0019. After you enter the phone number, click the next
button.
7. When you have typed in the telephone number of your choice, click Next.
8. Click Finish.
9. Now, back on the screen you get from Start:Settings:Dialup
Networking, you should see a new icon for the Dialup Networking
session you have created. You will require the following configuration
changes.
10. Choose the icon and right-mouse-click it to open up a pop-up menu.
Choose the Properties option from the menu.
11. Click on the Networking tab at the top of the dialog box,
then click on the TCP/IP Settings button where the cursor is
pointing in the following illustration.
12. Please note that most people will do fine leaving the default
settings on this dialog box. Everyone should leave the Server assigned
IP address setting alone. You do not want to specify your own IP
address. Doing so will most typically cause your Internet connection to
fail.
In most cases, it is also fine to leave the session set to use Server
assigned name server addresses. The two DNS server addresses are:
166.61.234.89
166.61.234.90
13. Check the Never dial a connection option. UVA says “If
left to the default, then any time you use an application that needs
network access, like Netscape, Internet Explorer or any Email client, then
Windows will try to dial up a network connection for you. This rarely
works, especially if you have it set to a telephone number that is often
busy, like the UVa modems. I recommend that you either clear this
checkmark or check the Never dial a connection option. It is really
better for you to successfully launch a Dialup Networking session before
you use an application that uses the network.
The idle disconnect setting is probably meant to save money for people
who pay by the minute and may forget to shut down their sessions, though
none of this makes sense in the UVa environment, since you are dialing
into timed lines that will hang up on you when your time is up whether you
are idle or not. We'd recommend you uncheck this box, then click the Okay
button.
When you are ready to open a Dialup Networking session, click on Start:Settings:Dialup
Networking, then double click on the icon for the particular bank of
modems you wish to dial. Choose by the speed, the duration and your guess
as to which modems might not be busy.”
Monticello Avenue only has one modem bank and we do not time our lines
but this is a good rule of thumb.
14. In the User Name field, you want to enter your Monticello
Avenue User ID. This is the same ID you use to log into your Email.
15. In the Password field, put in your Monticello Avenue
password. You will not be able to see what you are typing. Instead,
asterisks appear to mask each character. This is so that someone looking
over your shoulder while you log in won't see your password, unless they
are good at watching hands and determining what is being typed. Once you
enter your password, click Connect.
There should be a pause and then sounds from your modem as it dials and
either connects or gets a busy signal. You should get an error message if
you fail to get a connection. If you successfully get a connection you
will get a new icon in the system tray at the lower right of your screen
and you will become connected to the Internet. Now you can check your
Email, surf Web pages or whatever networking function you need for your
computer.
